Vacancy to work on Underground Coal Gasification in China

UCG Engineering Ltd

An experienced engineer with overseas project experience and knowledge of gasification processes is sought for a two-year assignment in China.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the process of gasifying coal seams in situ. Field trials have been undertaken in many part of the world, and is now of considerable interest as a clean coal process.

UCG Engineering Ltd (UCGEL) has been identified as the technology provider for a trial project in China to investigate UCG in deep seams. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that a process well configuration, suitable for UCG can be constructed in deep coal, and the resultant wells can be gasified to produce a consistent and high quality syngas at surface. The process uses advanced inseam drilling and completion methods developed in the oil and gas industry for the underground wells, and the project has a requirement to build a small surface plant for the pilot tests. If successful, an expansion of the process to commercial scale operations is anticipated.

After initial training, the successful engineer will reside in China for the duration of the project. The engineer will take charge of the design and construction of the underground engineering and the supporting surface plant, under the technical guidance of UCGEL. This will be followed by an operational phase of about 1 year in which the engineer will provide technical advice to the plant operators, and be responsible for monitoring and data analysis of the process. The equipment will be sourced from China and overseas and it is anticipated that the main client will assign secondees to assist the engineer in dealing with local suppliers.

The engineer should have, at least 3-5 years experience in the oil and gas or similar industry, and be capable of pilot plant design and construction. They should also have worked, ideally, at the interface with oil and gas production and be familiar with at least the completion technologies of wells.

A flexible outlook and an ability to work under the testing conditions of an overseas assignment are requirements for this work. A Mandarin speaker or one prepared to learn would be a definite advantage.

A two year contract is anticipated in the first instance. An overseas and remuneration package, consistent with experience will be provided. The assignment will start in October 2005.

UCG Engineering Ltd is a company formed to service the growing world wide interest in UCG. It provides feasibility studies, site evaluations and support for pilot studies. It was formed by Dr Michael Green, who had previously been Director of the European UCG project in Spain, and more recently the principal technical advisor to the UK DTI initiative on UCG.  www.coal-ucg.com
